James Knox Polk

There are a few things you need to know about James K. Polk. He was the 11th president, smack dab in the middle of Van Buren and Zachary Taylor. He often gets lost in a sea of successive presidents seemingly forgotten by history. YET! He was the reason the term "dark horse" candidate was invented. Also, James K. Polk fought the Mexican slash American War, won and brought home New Mexico and California. Oh hey West Coast! Can you say Manifest Destiny?? He is applauded for his ability to set and agenda and check off all his presidential goals at the end of 4 years. Some of the presidents I know could have used those tactics! He didn't even need to run again! That's sort of a lie, he died three months out of office. But! his last dying words were to his wife, "I love you Sarah, for all eternity, I love you." What. a. Stud. As if you needed more reason to L-O-V-E love him.
So with no further ado, I present the reincarnated James K. Polk, yes. That's right. My baby turtle. He is only the cutest thing ever, nbd.

Plus!! For your viewing pleasure. A Song.

Look at the little guy in front tweakin' out. I love him, because he loves James K. Polk.

Tiny Humans

As I probably have said before, my roommates and I want to steal babies. All the time. And usually they are ethnic babies. Black. Asian. Blasian. You name it, we've called dibs. It's not as creepy as it sounds. Promise.

(Surprisingly this came from last year, and I got to throughly enjoy Abby's and my friendship while I searched for this gem in the Facebook Archives.)

I recently got the best job in the whole world. Yup, I'm babysitting for an adorable little girl from Vietnam. She is the coolest four year old I know. Seriously, the first time I met her she was wearing a sparkly shirt with a cupcake on it.

Last week she reminded me of the best invention ever. Easy Bake Oven. It's actually amazing how a little lightbulb can make such delicious treats. Of course she was only interested in it for about ten minutes, then proceeded to just play with the bowls and measuring spoons in the sink, but I was loving it. They give you pink sprinkles and icing! Of course it reminded me of when Buddy bakes an Easy Bake Oven cake on Cake Boss, and I was about a gazillion times less skilled than him with the mini-cakes.

Also on the topic of babies, Abby has become the first one of my friends to be disqualified as a contender for Teen Moms. Happy Birthday!, but for really, personally I think between 4 of us we could take care of a baby, one of us is always home. I say go for it Abby, now that you are 20, it isn't looked down upon anymore, right? Now all you have to do is change your race and it will be perfect. We have the ball-pit, I'm thinking it would be a great crib. Great!

Also random, I just finished watching Grey's Anatomy and was so sad that Arizona left the show, I want to remember my favorite moment from her. She always has those type of speeches that give you the chills. That is why I love her. Well, not in the lesbian way that Callie does, of course.

"Okay. I know this is the first time on a Peds rotation for some of you not for others. But I wanted you to understand that I run my Peds unit a little differently. This is not general surgery in miniature. These are tiny humans. These are children. They believe in magic, they play pretend, there is fairy dust in their IV bags and they cross their fingers and they make wishes and that makes them more resilient than adults. They recover faster, survive worse. they believe. In Peds, we have miracles and magic and in Peds, anything is possible."

P.S. I think I probably shouldn't have watched Babies again about a week ago, it gives me crazy ideas.

General Awesomeness -- Check!

It's always fun to have a tourist around. That way you can still maintain your city chic cool demeanor without admitting that you actually enjoy the tourist attractions and typical hot spots. This weekend was awesome because I got to go all around Chicago with Nicole, and go to places that we normally don't venture to because we like to pretend that we are locals, and annoyed with mass crowds. Despite the absolutely perfect weather, there weren't that many people around Millennium Park and Navy Pier (first two tourist things to check off the list!) We took SOO MANY PICTURES by the Bean, seriously, this place breeds camera whores.

Katie proposed to Abby -- She. Said. Yes.

and Nicole almost fell to her death, phew! close call.

After the Park, Alexis made friends with the neighborly CTA drivers, so we could find our way to Navy Pier... I mean NAVY FEAR! j.k. y'alls... We finally got to the ferris wheel after only about a bazillion years of waiting! Yayyy!

This is not a stock photo, I'm artsy, duh.

Then! The tourist became the guide! Gasp! Nicole had found out about a great show in the Wicker Park area, it was a fantastic spoof of all things good in the world. Afterwards I'm pretty sure my cheeks hurt for about a half hour just from all the laughing!

Doooon't Stop Bl-eeeeeding...

P.S. Shout out to Will who talked me through writing this awesome post. Woot Woot!

Your Birthday's October 11th?!

Annie and Hallie have been a huge part of my life for over 12 years. It only seems right honor their 24th birthday in style. Although Jackie might have been mislead into thinking that this weekend was about her marathon, the countdown was truly for this most excellent of days. Naturally the wolf pack had movie night and chose "The Parent Trap." While watching, cinematically, we became very concerned over many elements of the film...

Why do they let the boy stay ALL SUMMER?

Why was Hallie crouching behind the duffle bags?

Why does Annie turn around?

Who thinks letting the bride wear a top hat is a good idea?

Do you have to wear Camp Walden gear all the time?

Why was the whole camp escorting them to the Isolation Cabin?

How did they get that kid from those parents?

Does Mere"death" know how to knit?

Was Annie invited to the Wedding?

Why did they not make this into a musical?

If anyone can offer answers to these mind-boggling questions, they will be our best friend forever. Sarah, the talent manger, will make provisions to indict them into the pack asap. In honor of this day, Sarah and I had an Annie and Hallie moment on the El. We grabbed the handles and apparantly stood up at the SAME time, Bingo. All these moment and it wasn't until the end when we realized the Natasha Richardson was no longer. Sad day.
Besides celebrating, we learned an important lesson today. VHS's have magical powers. They make you forget that they are buzzing for the last ten minutes, as long as the movie is a 90's cult classic. If you know all the words, the sound doesn't really matter now does it? In the end, the only important thing is to rewind, then you know you are a grown-up, that takes responsibility.

And for your viewing pleasure, a reanactment.

Push, Push Baby Don't Stop for a Minute

I hate running. But, I decided slash was convinced that I was going to give up on years of inactivity and start seriously running. I know, ew. That was my first thought too. But, it turns out it's not too bad. It's actaually... fun (gasp!). Running along the Lakeshore is cool (tempurature that is) and serene and pretty. I have started to notice that I actually crave running sometimes! Sure, it's tiring, since I have never been a runner, but having a great training partner makes up for it! Wink Wink Sarah Akers. I know she would never willingly make me run frantically for an extra mile and a half looking for her on the trail. Just Kidding. We decided our first race is going to be modest, just a 10K on Thanksgiving, but Jackie is super excited for us! (She is running a MARATHON tomorrow, by the way, no big deal or anything). It's awesome because I feel like I have pushed myself to do many things in my life, but never anything physical, so it's a good change of pace. I finally have a reason for wearing all my Lululemon clothes, and a reason to feed my obsession! To keep me motivated, I have been introduced to the great invention of NASTY RAP. It's fantastic. My favorite song to jam to while running is Push! among others that will not be discussed here. Hehe. My running playlist will hopefully keep me on this motivation high for the next 6 weeks until we are in our first real like race! Psh and I know a marathon will be coming right up after that, duh.

Gleek OUT!

The most highly anticipated show premiere of the season. The show that has its own store in Water Tower Place. The show the inspired my own high school choir. The show that introduced the youth of America to Barbra Striesand (or as she is affectionately known in 1708 on the "Wall of Tens," Babs.) Yes. I'm talking about Glee. Last night I had to make the crucial choice, God or Glee. And since there is that whole eternal salvation thing, I chose my bible study, but Lea Michele came in close second. So, this morning I woke up and hour early just to watch the premiere, and it was worth it. Not much is worth the precious sleep time, but obviously Glee was an exception. From the first few seconds I knew it would not disappoint. It was funnier, bigger, brighter and louder than ever. Heck, yes. It just leaves me wondering, how can they top that for the rest of the season? Answer: Britney. No last name needed. It might be bigger than Madonna. You heard it here first. Just sayin'.

The Light of the World

In high school I surrounded myself with other people who I felt held the same values and moral standards as I did. It was easy enough to meet these sort of people, they conjugated every week at Younglife and Campaigners. Everyone was open about their faith and a conversation about God seemed natural. I loved my life and I felt like everything was in place, and it was easy to see that God had blessed me and my friends and that he was working in our lives everyday.

The story changes a bit when I started college, a transition that in theory seems easy, because I go to a Jesuit school after all, somehow was not. I lost the Christian community and fellowship that I was used to, and somehow began on a journey away from Christ. It wasn't one particular thing, or even a few things, but one day I woke up and realized how far away my relationship with Christ had become. It was as if the person that I was in high school didn't exist anymore. Was I afraid of outwardly showing my faith? Did I think that might make it harder to meet friends?

The fact is that for centuries, Christians have been unpopular. But now, it should be easier than ever for someone to proclaim their love for Christ, so why is it so difficult? No one wants to be known as the bible thumping Jesus freak, or the good girl who will look down upon a dirty joke or even cursing. This is my fear. I am afraid that my faith will come between me and my friends, with whom a conversation about Jesus would feel unnatural.

Somehow in the past few months I realized that hiding my heart is not that way that I want to live. My favorite part of the Bible is Matthew 5, the Beatitudes or the Sermon on the Mountain, whatever you want to call it. Every time I come back to this book I am reminded why I decided to lead a Christian life in the first place, and the words warm me inside. My favorite part says this "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven"(Matthew 5:14).

So, this is me saying that I am tired of hiding my light, and although it might take some time and a little bit of adjustment, I want to let my light shine as bright as it possibly can. I recently began going to Campus Crusade and joined a Bible study with some fantastic girls. Also I am involved with Companions, which is a student ministry program. During our first meeting, the leader asked for a word that we would describe the year as. Mine was "hopeful." I am so hopeful that I am able to let Christ back into my life and he will work
and change my heart yet again. Yesterday I met up with a friend, a leader from Campus Crusade and she quoted C.S. Lewis saying that "We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." This really struck me because I feel like I have been settling in more than one area of my life, and I don't need to. I believe I deserve someone who is outwardly crazy about me! God's plan for me is not to be easily pleased, as his daughter, he wants the best and brightest life for me.

I'll finish this very un-typical post by saying this: If not everyone can see the light that Christ puts in your life, we must love them anyways, and realize they can love us too. Leading a Christian life means to me, doing things that Jesus would have done and what he commands us to do, even though our lives are completely broken. Although his grace will save us, John says in a letter "It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in truth, just as the Father commanded us. And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one that we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love" (2 John 1:4). I am ready to put my best foot forward and begin to walk along Christ's path for my life.

I love Jackie, and so do older men.

Top Ten Reasons I love Jacqueline Marie Dulude!

10. Splatter Paint Projects, Princess-Diaries-meets-G.I.-Joe style.

9. Her bed's free!

8. She helps me improve my monster voice, it's slightly less Governator-esque.

7. My sitting in the nose-bleeds seats at baseball games partner!

6. Without her swiping skills our kitchen would be missing many many important things.

5. Bunning. She almost let me pelt her with Dixie Cups.

4. Her artistic wonders/wiles created the Wolf-pack crest.

3. Pancakes in bed! Even if we did decide to get out before they were ready.

2. When she speaks Spanish, my clothes fall off.

1. She is a Champion. Whole Burrito and Pint of Ice Cream in a hour.  Man vs Food EAT THAT!

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAC!

Give me those Sprinkles!

Is it just me, or does it seem like lately that cupcakes have TAKEN OVER THE WORLD! Even in my little neighborhood there are three "gourmet" cupcake shops and I know I have previously written about two places in Cincinnati. These sort of places didn't exist two years ago so where did they all come from! They are super cute and everyone that works there is high on sugar (or something stronger?), as my friend Alexis mocked them: "Oh my GOD, YES, Cupcakes!" I might ask where in the world these overly caffeinated and peppy girls come from, too? Anyways, these places have us bowing down to them... Is this a McKinley High Glee Club cupcake sale? I don't know anything else that gets my roommates and I to run down the street at a moments notice, so something must be up. Let me back up, today Abby got a tweet from Alexis saying that Sprinkles would give you a free cupcake if you whispered the password "Raspberry Cordial." Even this ritual seems like a cult, but I am not complaining... and neither would you if you had the most delicious cupcake ever smeared all over your hands and face in the middle of a park on a gorgeous Chicago afternoon.

Feelin' Good and Hungry

I love the performers in the subway, on the streets and all over Chicago. I always try to give them my spare change because I love hearing random singing and I don't want them to go away. The only problem I have is that a favorite song of these street entertainers is "My Girl." While this might not be a problem for some, to most Cincinnatians, this song is no longer "My Girl" but it is the Skyline jingle, and I can't seem to shake the lyrics that the commercial replaced. So whenever I hear "I guess... you'd say... what can make me feel this way!..." I instinctively want to say "SKYLINE." Call it good PR, but I just get embarrassed.
After this occurred a couple of times, I decided my sub-conscience must be craving the delicious mouth watering taste of chili cheese coneys, and that is not a desire I was going to leave unsatisfied! Abby, Jackie and Sarah make really classy dinners. Spaghetti, BBQ Chicken Pizza, Chicken Prochutio. But, for me, nothing is better than good old, make-your-heart-stop, skyline chili treats! Heck. Yes. Represent. I warned that it was expected to be messy and delicious, and I would be disappointed if my roommates (plus Denise and Lauren =] ) tried to stay classy and clean. By the end they were asking for me to pile on more chili. This is yet another thing I can claim to get my friends addicted to, it's right up there with Sex and the City. But of course, I would never solicit addictive behavior...

What's the Scoop?

I recently embarked upon the traditional college experience of changing my major! Not that I didn't have fond memories of supply and demand curves, I just realized they were not what I wanted to do with the rest of my life! (P.S. Dad, I know business isn't just about supply and demand, but if you don't like the basics, then what will you like? C'mon!) So I decided that I would go the Communication route, and that is how I wound up in my first ever college writing class, emphasis on the reporting! The day before, I was chatting with my mom, joking that I was going to wear my black bowler hat with the the "press" written on the rim. She said no. Bummer. No worries though, I still had lots of jargon going for me! "Hot off the Press! Get 'em while they're hot!" "Wire that, stat!"

So the day I had my Reporting and Writing class I walked across the street all bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to take on the world. Well as most people know in comedies, especially in Sex and the City (Carrie Bradshaw = my ultimate idea of good journalism at the moment! Is that twisted? Never.) whenever someone makes a wide sweeping declaration of confidence, that usually means everything they have going for them, is going down the drain in the next scene. When I got to my class my professor gave a brief intro, stating what he has accomplished and such and such, he was a pretty well versed journalist, still writing freelance pieces while teaching. Then he made a comment about wearing the "press hats" and showed us his legit NEWS notepads. You know, the kind that flip from the top and you have to look frantic while copying down every word in an interview. He then told us one of our assignments was going to be keeping up on current events, which I was so eager about, I always wish that I knew what was going on in the world! The only down point of the class was that he crushed the stereotype that a press pass gets you into anything your little heart desires. Well there goes the Carrie Bradshaw-esque red carpet premieres and hot club openings! Dang!
Never the less, I left class with spring still in my step, determined to get ahead in the class, I was not to fall victim to the Sex and the City stereotype! So I walked the two blocks to Border's hoping to get my very own flip notebook. I found one that looked pretty classy, it was small and could fit in my back pocket. I had visions of flipping it open at a moments notice and interviewing people, man-on-the-street style. I went to check out but couldn't find the newspapers, I figured they had been bought out for the day, strike one. Then the lady rung up my little notebook and to my surprise it was $15! Too embarrassed to admit that I thought that was OUTRAGEOUS, I paid for it and vowed to come back that next day to return it. Then I went outside on the street and thought about buying a newspaper from the street vendors, strike two, I had no change. So I decided that ING Café, in the bottom of Baumhart was sure to sell the newspaper. I walk in there, but all they have is copies to rent and read while you sit in there. I wasn't about to sit in the coffee shop alone, I wasn't a real journalist yet or anything! So again feeling embarrassed, I forced myself to buy an ice tea pretending like that was the reason that I stumbled in there. I don't even like iced tea. Strike three.
I bumbled back to my room and retold the story to my roommate who offered me some change to go get the newspaper from a vendor. So later I walked downstairs, got a paper and went back to my room to read it. I had just bought the paper from yesterday. In the span of about two hours I went from having more energy than a cheerleader on Speed to having my pep balloon completely deflated. But it's ok, because the best thing about having Carrie Bradshaw as a role model is that after every fall she always stands back up - in really fabulous shoes.

I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.

New Year. New stomping grounds. Since I came to Chicago a year ago I had previously declared myself a Cubs fan. Wrigleyville is filled with preppy guys rooting for their Cubbies even when they stink, it just seems classier than the White Sox somehow, ya know? They have the cute song that gets sung when the cubs win and they fly the "W" flag so you can see it from the El. Its sweet. So when we decided to go to a White Sox v. Yankees game, I think I wanted to root for the Yankees just to go against the Sox (sorry Will, I know this would get me killed in Boston =/ ) So we got on the El with some new friends =) and took the short ride to U.S. Cellular, which is technically closer than Wrigley now, sad day. It was definitely a different experience than the intimate Wrigley Field...IT WAS HUGE! I almost ate a true Chicago style hotdog, I had all the fixin's but I just couldn't give up my Heinz 57 Varieties. I love ketchup too much, it might be a problem. Ketchup and I have been seriously committed for way longer than I have been with Chicago, and I have no intention of breaking up, in relationship speak, that is. Also! Sarah got a scorecard for a dollar, she can count bases and all that jazz, CHECK HER OUT! There are lollipops that light up over the scoreboard during Take me out to the Ballgame! And If that isn't enough for you, just look at the vendors who sell margaritas from a backpack! - only 14.50 a cup. Bargain, duh.

Abby, Me, Sarah and Kaley!

Sarah and Abby with the Chi-City!

P.S. On a unrelated to baseball, but very related to the city side note... Today on a walk I saw two weddings, a Ferrari parked half on the street, half on the sidewalk outside my building and a man in swim trucks carrying a fresh dead fish - by the gills no less - down Michigan Ave. I love this city.

Oh no! Our plan for the biggest cookie went HORRIBLY WRONG.

We do Yoga in the Living Room.

When I was little my mom always read this book to me called "We eat dinner in the bathtub." It was all about this family who used the different rooms in their house to do strange things. They slept in the dining room, cooked in the bedroom and such and such. Moving in was CRAZY and for a while there was no hope for ever having room to doing anything, and we could have very possibly had to do just this! Eat dinner in the bathtub! Just kidding, we don't have a bathtub, but we do have a seat in the shower. Plus Plus of a handicap room! (along with the peep hole close to my belly button!) But everything is great now! Including the mermaid themed bathrooms and the Friends themed Living room. Best Part? Gunther on the Kitchen table saying "Rachel has those shoes in Brown." It's like eating at Central Perk, all day, ev'ry day. Things like this make us really loud. Wonder why? We were really happy to find out that the stairs are on one side of our room and the elevators are on the other. We can get REALLY loud no problem now! Heck yes!

So how is this relevant? Welllll, today we started out doing a bit of shopping just around the block, that's downtown for ya. We were supposed to help Jackie find some running shorts, but instead we all found new outfits from Lululemon, and a couple free yoga classes. We couldn't wait for those to start, so we commenced a new 1708 tradition, YOGA TIME! We cranked up the Enya mix and got down to business, down-dog that is! Sun Saluation! Vinyasa! Cobra! Oh my! SO EASTERN!

This is not an actual action shot. Disappointing, I know.

1: Yoga doesn't actually make me look like a murderer. 2: Sarah does give us this look a lot, true story.

Despite doing our own fun things like yoga time, it still feels like we are playing house, and that in a little while our moms are going to come back and say playtime is over, and make us go to our own houses for dinner. (Flashback to the days of my mom yelling out the front door "WHITE GIRLS, DINNER!" Not such a politically correct call in retrospect. Oops.) This is real-life! We do what we want now! And that is so frickin' weird to say!

I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, In Perfect Harmony!

This title lies. I love the world full of disharmony and dissonance... neither of which are displeasing to this girl! Somehow all the stars alined and the Whipty-Do! Crew was able to have a night on the town, aka down the street at Red Rock Karaoke night, but same difference. We belted our hearts out to the irritation of a specific bartender, who we decided wasn't worth our worry, and we continued, maybe even louder. Natalie and I started the night off with a twang-y and pitchy rendition of Sugarland's (what can I say, new obsession, oops!) Somethin' More. Then we all sang Stay Beautiful and Party in the USA (picked by our new bestie, the DJ). Ally and Ellie were super brave, no liquid courage necessary, and sang solo's of I Hope You Dance and Hey Jude, respectively. The next song Natalie and I lined up was dedicated to Abby, so naturally we picked Your Body is a Wonderland, we just couldn't keep it to ourselves everyone joined in. We made friends with the fellow karaoke-ers, G and Tina, Karl and Buck. Heck Yes! Best Friends for Life. If only we were going to be around next Tuesday... and not off starting new lives in many different cities. Maybe the Chicago Girls will be up for Karaoke too, here's hoping!
